Decision is based on the high presence of juvenile anchovies. In addition, it is not ruled out that the capture of this resource will not begin in November as every year.

The Ministry of Production (Produce) not only shortened exploratory fishing two days ahead of schedule, but also decided not to start the first industrial anchovy extraction season in 2023 due to the high incidence of juveniles, which reached 86.3 %.

“An important issue for the ministry is the preservation of the fishing resource. If we were to leave at this time, what we would do is prey on the resource and clearly affect the evolution of this fishery in the following years. That is why we believe that the most responsible thing is not to start the season”, announced yesterday the head of Produce, Raúl Pérez-Reyes.

The minister specified that this decision will have an impact of at least 30% on the export of flour, and did not rule out the possibility of canceling the second anchovy fishing season, which usually begins in November.
