The Government authorized the second anchovy fishing season in the north-central area of Peru for indirect human consumption. The measure will take effect from next October 26.
Days before, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) mentioned that exploratory fishing enabled by the Ministry of Production (Produce) could open the fishing season to reactivate the industry affected by the lack of stock, since the first season, which It usually opened in May, but it did not materialize due to the number of juveniles and climatic factors.
READ ALSO: Scotiabank: there will be a second fishing season, but it will be affected by El Niño This time, the report from the Peruvian Sea Institute (Imarpe), based on monitoring as of October 15, recommended that it should be considered “for decision-making an exploitation rate (E) less than 0.35 (precautionary), as a forecast for the current Coastal El Niño event in the remainder of 2023 and summer 2024 and the possible occurrence of Global El Niño in 2024." Also “consider the management measures necessary to guarantee the protection of the juvenile fraction of the stock.”
The decree published this October 22 specifies that the maximum allowable catch limit is 1,682,000 tons.
