Cargill, White Dog Labs agreement to deliver scalable, sustainable feed for aquaculture customers

Cargill is expanding its offerings of sustainable alternatives to fishmeal in aqua feed thanks to a new agreement with White Dog Labs. The deal secures access to ProTyton™, White Dog Labs' single-cell protein produced by fermentation with corn feedstock—a sustainable alternative to harvesting fishmeal—which, like fishmeal, is high in protein and amino acids. ProTyton™ will be ready to ship from White Dog Labs' demo facility in Sutherland, NE in 2020.

U.S. Deregulates Aquafeed Ingredient Made by Cargill

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has deregulated Cargill’s canola oil-based long-chain omega-3 fatty acids for aquafeed production, enabling the agribusiness to sell the product in the U.S., the company announced in an August 7 release. Sold under the brand name Latitude, the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids help to raise levels of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids in farm raised salmon.

Cargill said the product will reduce aquafeed producers’ reliance on wild fish populations for omega-3 fatty acids and stabilize prices for the ingredient.

Cargill shuts animal-feed mills in China as fatal hog disease spreads

Cargill Inc shuttered animal-feed mills in China in recent months partly because the rapid spread of a fatal hog disease has reduced demand, a company executive said on Friday.

The closures highlight the pain for global agriculture companies from the outbreak of African swine fever in China, the world’s top hog producer and pork consumer.

African swine fever, for which there is no cure and no vaccine, kills almost all infected pigs, though it does not harm people.
