This Tuesday, August 22, the two scientific vessels of the Imarpe (José Olaya Balandra and Luis Flores Portugal) will sail from Callao to study the spawning biomass of anchovy, information that will help determine the start of the Second Fishing Season 2017 in the area North-Central region of the country, according to the Minister of Production, Pedro Olaechea.
 

"Peru is one of the few countries that performs several cruises and uses different methods of evaluation to reduce uncertainty in the estimation of biomass and give anchovy fishing quotas, which guarantee the sustainability of our main resource," he said.

This is the first of the two cruises that Imarpe will perform and will last approximately 20 days.

"This first cruise, which will be carried out with the support of three commercial ships provided by the industry, will travel throughout the Peruvian coast to estimate the spawning biomass using the method of daily production of anchovy eggs," he noted.

Pedro Olaechea said that the second cruise, which will evaluate the total biomass of anchovy (juveniles and adults, among others), will depart on September 15 to monitor the first miles of the coast.

"Upon completion of these two cruises, which will allow us to know the distribution and concentration of the anchovy resource, Imarpe will prepare a technical report with the main results of this evaluation, which will be the basis for recommending to the Ministry of Production the start and the quota of the second Fishing season in the North-Central zone, "revealed Minister Pedro Olaechea.

So far in 2017, fishing has contributed significantly to the growth of the economy. In June alone, the fishing sector, which has an incidence of 0.7% in the GFP, grew 52% compared to the same period of the previous year. Cifra with which accumulated three months of consecutive growth.
